La Liga giants Barcelona are monitoring the situation of Chelsea stalwart Petr Cech, as they feel he may be a realistic transfer target for them next summer, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The 31-year-old has been at Stamford Bridge since 2004, winning numerous trophies in that time and establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

However, his place could now be under threat from promising youngster Thibaut Courtois, who has just started a third season out on loan with Spanish side Atletico Madrid. Although the Belgian has so far failed to dislodge Cech as the Blues’ first choice, it is thought that next year could finally be the year he is given the chance.

Barcelona are keeping a close eye on the situation, having already been linked with Courtois as well, as they seek a new replacement in goal for Victor Valdes, who seems set to leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Chelsea may feel they would rather keep hold of Courtois, as he is a more long-term option than Cech, despite many years of great service from the Czech Republic international.

Barca president Sandro Rosell has also said, however, that he still feels he could be able to persuade Valdes to stay at the club.
