Arsenal reportedly failed in their attempts to sign Juventus centre-back Martin Caceres this summer, according to talkSPORT.

The Gunners were linked with a number of defensive targets in this summer’s transfer window in a bid to strengthen their shaky back-line, though in the end they didn’t manage to bring anyone in before deadline day.

Caceres was thought to be another one of their top targets, though Juventus were not keen to let such a key player leave the club. rejecting an enquiry from Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

The 26-year-old Uruguayan international, formerly of Barcelona and Sevilla, could still be a target for Arsenal when the transfer window opens again in January, though they may still face competition from Napoli for his signature.

Caceres has 48 caps for his country and his experience of winning trophies with both Barca and Juve would make him a good addition at the back for Arsenal, who don’t have much in the way of options beyond current first-choice centre-back pairing Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

Arsenal were also linked with another Juventus defender this summer, with Swiss right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner also supposedly on Wenger’s radar for potential additions to his back four.
