Man United boss David Moyes is looking to freshen up his Old Trafford defence and has now joined the race to sign sign Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels according to the Daily Express.

Barcelona are said to be hot on the heels of the 24 year old German international, who has a £29.5m release clause, and the Nou Camp side see Hummels as a long term replacement for veteran Carles Puyol.

Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp is already planning for life without the former Bayern Munich man and has targeted FC Basel’s Fabian Schar, who is also being pursued by Arsenal and Juventus.

Man United’s 4-1 thumping at the hands of local rivals Man City may well have been a watershed moment for Moyes, a realization that veteran pair Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are no longer fit for purpose. Though the Scottish boss has the option of using Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling or Phil Jones as possible options it’s fair to say that Hummels is head and shoulders above these players in terms of ability and consistency and therefore is a viable target.
