Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is hoping to re-sign in-demand Real Madrid midfield player Xabi Alonso on a free transfer at the end of this season, according to reports in the London Evening Standard.

The highly rated Spain international has not featured so far for los Blancos in this campaign under new head coach Carlo Ancelotti after suffering a succession of injuries during preseason to both his groin and foot, although Alonso is now back in training and preparing for an imminent return to the first team.

However, with a contract in the Spanish capital that now only runs until June 30 2014 and still no sign that the Liga giants are preparing to offer the 31-year-old a new deal to remain at the club beyond next summer, it is understood that the west London club are preparing to swoop for Alonso come the turn of the year.

The holding midfield player is able to start negotiating with interested foreign-based clubs as soon as the winter transfer window opens again for business in January, and it is understood that the Blues are readying a three-year contract to lure the player to Stamford Bridge, where Alonso would be reunited again with the ‘Special One’ after the three years the pair spent together in Spain.
