The 27 year old is also being tracked by Newcastle United and Rodgers hopes to bring in the adaptable Eredivisie star to strengthen his squad.

Toivoen can play as an attacking midfielder or out wide or in a central striking role and a move to Liverpool may well tempt the PSV Eindhoven man.

The former Malmo man has been at PSV since 2009 and has netted 79 goals for the club.

Liverpool have seen Daniel Sturridge ruled out with a long term injury and with Spaniard Iago Aspas failing to impress Rodgers will be keen to bring in some much needed attacking reinforcements in January.
