The west London club have made the purchase of a new left back their main priority for the next season as doubts continue to grow about the form and fitness going forward of veteran left-sided full-back Ashley Cole at Stamford Bridge.

The experienced England international is 32 now and his current contract with the Blues only lasts until the end of this campaign, with Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho said to be scouring the European market in the search for possible replacements for Cole.

And the player that the self-styled Special One has identified is understood to be Wolfsburg’s 21-year-old left back, although the Bundesliga outfit will not allow Rodriguez to depart Germany though until next summer.

Rodriguez, who has a contract with Wolfsburg that runs until June 2016, has been with the German side since January 2012, when the player arrived from Swiss outfit FC Zurich.

And in the intervening period, the Switzerland international has managed to find the back of the net on three occasions in his 57 league outings for Zurich.
