Arsenal are reportedly scouting a pair of Primeira Liga talents according to O Jogo, as reported on the always excellent Sport Witness website.

The North London club have sent Francis Cagigao to scout Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, who’s displays this term have helped the cash strapped side to mount a genuine domestic title challenge whilst also helping the 21 year old to force his way into the Portuguese national team set-up.

The rangy defensive midfielder has been an ever present this season, being a pivotal performer in the club’s rise to the top of the Primeira Liga and given the Estádio José Alvalade side hope of ending their decade plus wait for a championship.

As a result the player had a massive €45m release clause written into his contract, the type of inflated price that may scare off some clubs from making an approach but Arsene Wenger may well look to make an offer, with Man United also said to be keen on Carvainho.

Arsenal are also apparently keen on €10m rated Portuguese national team keeper Rui Patricio, who’s form between the sticks has helped Sporting Lisbon to concede just nine goals in 14 Primeira Liga fixtures and the 25 year old club captain may be seen by the Gunners boss as an ideal top quality keeper to battle young Pole Wojciech Szcz?sny for the starting spot.

The fact that both players would be eligible to compete in this season’s Champions League action may well be an extra motivating factor for Arsene Wenger as the French boss looks to end a lengthy lean spell.
