The Serbian international has been strongly linked with a move back to Stamford Bridge for some weeks and when he was dropped by Benfica for their crucial encounter with arch rivals FC Porto on the weekend it became clear that an exit was on the cards.

Matic left Chelsea as part of the deal that saw David Luiz move to Stamford Bridge back in 2011 and will cost the West London club a fee in the region of £22m, with Jose Mourinho perhaps seeing the rangy midfielder as a fresh dimension to his first team set-up.

The tough tackler has the ability to convert defence into attack with rangy runs into the opposition territory and his imminent arrival may lead to the likes of John Obi Mikel or Michael Essien leaving Chelsea.

The deal to sign Matic is offset by the likely sale of Belgian Kevin de Bruyne to Wolfsburg, a deal that will net Chelsea £16m.

Matic has been a big success since moving to Portugal and last term the 25 year old ended up with runners-up medals in both domestic league and cup competitions as well as the Europa League, the final of which they lost to Chelsea.

In his previous spell at Chelsea Matic managed just three appearances before he was loaned out to Vitesse Arnhem and then sold outright by then boss Carlo Ancelotti.
