Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen to strengthen his central midfield options with a view to acquiring a tough tackler having seen his one current option in this regard, Mathieu Flamini, suspended for four matches following his red card at St Mary’s earlier this week.

Wenger is also keen on PSG’s Blaise Matuidi but if efforts to sign the French international fail then the North London club will make a move for Schneiderlin, who has been in fine form this season.

The 24 year old Frenchman has been a mainstay of the Saints first team since arriving from Strasbourg in June 2008, playing a key part in the South Coast side’s rise from League One to the Premier League.

The box to box performer has more than proved himself capable of making an impact at the top level and may well jump at the chance of a move to Arsenal, a move that would certainly aid his push for a first senior French national team cap.

Schneiderlin has made 213 appearances for Southampton and is something of a fan favourite an a player boss Mauricio Pochettino will not want to lose.
