The Anfield outfit are currently sat in fourth spot in the Premier League and are still in with a good shot at making it back to the Champions League next season.

However, with Leiva set to miss the next two months with a knee ligament injury he believes that more players are needed in order to maintain a strong challenge for a top four spot come May.

The Reds have been long linked with making a loan move for the 29-year-old, and when asked about whether he would be a welcome addition to the squad Lucas said:  “He is a good player and produced many good performances at Manchester City.

“If he comes it will be good for the squad because it’s important to have a strong squad.

“I believe that if anyone comes who plays in my position it will not be because of my injury but rather to strengthen the squad.”

Lucas also believes that he will be back to compete before the end of the season, and still has a spot in Brazil’s World Cup squad firmly set in his mind.

“I am working hard to be back as soon as possible and do well for the club.

“Hopefully I will have the luck to play for the national team in the World Cup.”
