Old Trafford boss David Moyes has sent scouts to monitor the powerful midfielder, who has been likened to former Arsenal man Patrick Vieira, and is said to be keen on landing the 21 year old Portuguese international.
The strong tackling ‘enforcer’ has a massive £37m release clause but this may not prove an obstacle as Moyes is said to have been handed a massive transfer fund boost.
Carvalho’s consistent displays have provided the back-bone of Sporting Lisbon’s excellent Primeira Liga campaign, with Leonardo Jardim’s side mounting a genuine title challenge.
Sporting Lisbon are though strapped for cash and had to sell a number of their star performers over the summer and as such could well consider offers below Carvalho’s release clause.
David Moyes lacks an out and out defensive midfielder and using Marouane Fellaini in a holding role to fill such a void didn’t appear to pay off, prior to the Belgian being sidelined with injury concerns.
Carvalho could offer some much needed protection to the club’s creative talents, especially new signing Juan Mata, and is a player Man United should look to capture in the summer.
