Agent Of Manchester United Defensive Transfer Target Confirms Unknown Bid Rejected In January

Old Trafford switch could well be on the cards after Argentina star confirms offer rejected in January.

The agent of SL Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay says that the Primeira Liga giants rejected a January transfer window bid for the Argentina star’s services, with Manchester United heavily linked.

The 27 year-old was thought to be lined up as a replacement for Nemanja Vidic, who will leave for Inter Milan on a free transfer at the end of the season, and the Red Devils may yet go back in for his signature again in the summer.

“Benfica resisted offers so the transfer didn’t materialise at this stage; mainly because they wanted to have the best players to be able to fight for titles,” Rafael Zurro told A Bola.

“It may have been a difficult decision for us to understand but we move on from it. We will see what happens in the future.

“Right now the market is closed and Garay is concentrating on sporting matters, achieving the best possible results and, of course, having a great World Cup.

“Certainly there will be further discussions in the future to clarify the situation.

“In the summer he will be entering the final year of his contract with Benfica, so logically there will be news.

“But at this moment, I insist, Garay is only thinking about Benfica.”

With one year remaining on his contract from June, Garay holds all the cards this summer, and if he elects against extending his deal, Benfica may well elect to cash in rather than lose him for free in a year’s time.

With Nemanja Vidic already confirmed to be moving on, and Rio Ferdinand’s poor form and back injury issues leading to him considering his future, Garay would be an astute signing for Moyes.
