The Spanish striker shared a dressing room with the Argentine tactician during their playing days at the Vicente Calderon, and Torres has admitted that he is a huge fan of him as a coach.

Torres has been linked with a return to his former club this summer in a move that could see Diego Costa going the other way to Stamford Bridge.

“I have a lot of admiration for Cholo from the time when we were team-mates. He has helped me a lot, he taught me to be captain”, the 30-year-old told AS.

“He taught me many things in our seasons together at Atleti.

“I always want to work with people I admire. I admired Rafa Benitez from outside and had the opportunity to work with him.

“It is the same with Jose Mourinho and Luis Aragones.

“I have been fortunate to work with people who, when you see from the outside you say: ‘What is it they have? What is their secret? Why do all the teams they work with win?’

“Simeone is like [Pep] Guardiola or other coaches. You’d get to see and learn how they train.”
