Tottenham are leading the chase for AC Milan striker Alessandro Matri after it emerged that Fiorentina are having doubts about signing the loaned in forward on a permanent basis according to Football Direct News.

The experienced Italian international has been targeted by a White Hart Lane side desperate for striking options and a move for the 29 year old could be a cost effective option for chairman Daniel Levy.

Levy has seen massive money moves for Erik Lamela and Roberto Soldado fail badly and may now have to consider cheaper options this summer.

Matri has netted four goals for Fiorentina since moving to the Stadio Artemio Franchi in January and could well be tempted by a fresh challenge having spent his entire career in his native Italy.

Spurs have been indebted to in-form marksman Emmanuel Adebayor since the turn of the year and the sale of Jermain Defoe to MLS side Toronto FC is now beginning to look like it may have been a big mistake.

Tim Sherwood’s future as Tottenham boss is very much in the balance and as such any move to identify potential new additions may well be left on the back burner until the end of the current campaign.
