The Italian international captains the Clarence Seedorf’s side, but he is said to be unhappy at how much the club have struggled to keep up with the title chasing pack as they currently lie ten points behind fourth placed Fiorentina, meaning that European football is likely to be off the menu next term.

And that prospect has ruffled the feathers of a few of the club’s stars, and rumours of an exodus have been rife, with Montolivo said to be one of the players first out the door.

United boss David Moyes is a known fan of the 28-year-old and is keen to bring him on board, though he apparently faces some tough competition from Real Madrid for his signature.

Montolivo is under contract at the San Siro until 2016 but it is expected that a lack of European football and a substantial offer from United would see him free to leave the club.
