Arsenal are readying a bid to once again smash their transfer record with a big money offer for PSG forward Edinson Cavani.

CaughtOffside understands that Emirates Stadium boss Arsene Wenger has requested his board makes significant funds available so as to land the Uruguayan international, who is now the north London club’s prime summer transfer target.

Wenger believes he can challenge the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid in the race to sign the marksman, who is said to be unsettled at the Parc des Princes.

PSG spent €64.5m (£53m) to bring in Cavani from Napoli last summer and Arsenal are ready to offer as much as €75m (£61m) and will mount the bid prior to the 2014 World Cup finals, when a good showing from the powerful striker could well further increase the player’s valuation.

There will be some who find the idea of such a bid from Arsenal to be far fetched but then the jump from the club’s previous transfer record, the £15m paid for Andrei Arshavin in 2009 being blown out of the water by the £42.5m paid to Real Madrid for Mesut Ozil last September, was far more pronounced than the increase planned with the Premier League side’s planned move for Cavani.

Arsenal are financially in a very healthy state of affairs and the club is keen to appease their fan-base after seeing their Premier League title falter this term, due in no small part to Arsene Wenger’s refusal to invest in talent in the January transfer window.

Wenger feels his side need a more effective striker leading their attack and a move for one of the best in his position in the world is befitting of a club that is one of the most profitable on the planet.

Cavani may be tempted by a move to London and would know that a move to Arsenal would see him become a player Wenger would mould his attack around and having grown frustrated as playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the French capital such a prospect could well be one that the in-form attacker would consider.

Arsene Wenger has strong links with PSG, who have been linked with moves to bring in the manager on a number of occasions, and this too could aid a move to bring in Cavani.

The Arsenal boss is ready to conduct a major striking re-shuffle with the likes of Lukas Podolski, Nicklas Bendtner and loaned out South Korean Park-Chu Young all linked with departures.

Indeed Wenger will also consider offers for Thomas Vermaelen, Mikel Arteta and Abou Diaby.

Cavani emerged on the scene in Italy when he made a name for himself at Palermo before securing a move to Napoli, where he scored an astonishing 104 goals in three seasons at the San Paolo prior to a PSG switch.

Despite often being used in a wide attacking role, to accommodate Ibrahimovic, Cavani has scored at a healthy rate with the 27 year old racking up his 22nd goal of the campaign during PSG’s 3-0 win over Reims, a win that takes Laurent Blanc’s side 16 points clear of second placed AS Monaco in the Ligue 1 table.
