The Old Trafford club axed Moyes this morning, bringing to an end the Scot’s tenure in charge less than a year into his six year contract, and will now set about considering replacement for the position.

Van Gaal has been linked with a move to take over from Tim Sherwood at Tottenham but is said to prefer the prospect of managing Man United.

62 year old van Gaal is a hugely experienced campaigner and could well be the right man to steady the ship in the short to medium term and is strong character who will demand the respect of the Man United squad.

The former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss has won seven domestic titles in three countries and clinched a Champions League triumph whilst in Amsterdam back in 1994/95.

Ryan Giggs has assumed control as caretaker manager in the interim period.
