The Premier League champions parted company with former boss David Moyes last week, with the Scot having lasted just 10 months into the six-year contract that he was handed when replacing Sir Alex Ferguson in the Old Trafford dugout last summer.

And immediately the experienced Dutch trainer was installed as the favourite to become the next manager of the Red Devils, especially after Van Gaal had made it so public that he wanted to coach one day in the Premier League.

In fact, it is even believed that preliminary talks have already taken place between officials from United and Van Gaal himself at his holiday home in the Algarve last week, however, it is now understood that the 62-year-old wants United to announce his appointment in the role before the end of this week.

“I think I have to concentrate on the World Cup because I am coach of the Dutch team,” Van Gaal said.
