However, Cole, whose contract expires this summer, has not responded in kind and is keen to not rush into any agreements, meaning that he may keep the club waiting on an answer.

Cole looked set to depart the west London outfit at the end of the season after he was ignored by Jose Mourinho for the majority of the campaign.

Up until last week’s Champions League semi-final first leg trip to face Atletico Madrid, Cole had not started a game for Chelsea since facing Stoke in the FA Cup on Jan 26.

The 33-year-old not only saw his Chelsea career under threat, but his World Cup spot too.

Cole kept his spot against Liverpool at the weekend, in which he helped the side keep a clean sheet and put themselves back in the running to claim the Premier League title.

And his two performances against Atletico and Liverpool have convinced club officials that he is worthy of a further one-year extension.
