The 62 year old has been strongly linked with the Old Trafford post for some time and will apparently take charge after the 2014 World Cup finals where he will lead the Dutch national team.

The former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager will apparently look to keep Ryan Giggs on as part of his managerial team and is set to oversee a massive squad re-building project as Man United look to move on after a disastrous campaign that has left them without a Champions League berth for next term.

Van Gaal has won domestic titles in Holland, Spain and Germany and will hope to do likewise in the English Premier League.

Under David Moyes Man United have experienced a hugely disappointing season and the Scot was axed after barely ten months in charge and the club’s owners will hope that an experienced manager like van Gaal will be able to steer the club in the right direction.
