The England international was on the receiving end of a tough-looking challenge from Hull City’s Maynor Figueroa during the Premier League champions’ final home game of the Premier League season at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, with Jones having to be stretchered off with the shoulder problem.

And now following X-rays in hospital it is set to be confirmed that while Jones has not suffered a fracture to his shoulder, the centre back cum right back cum holding midfielder has though damaged ligaments in the problem area that means the 22-year-old is now expected to be ruled out of action for at least the next month.

All of which means that Jones is set to miss out on what would have been the player’s first-ever appearance in the World Cup after the Three Lions head coach Roy Hodgson recently made it clear that he would not select any players in his final 23-man squad for the tournament that could not take part in England’s five-day pre-World Cup training camp in Portugal that starts on May 19.
