The Blues will send out youngster Kurt Zouma and Tomas Kalas on loan moves in 2014/15 and as such are ready to sign a more experienced defender to fight the likes of John Terry, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic for first team action next term.

Mourinho’s first choice for the role comes in the form of 21 year old Real Madrid starlet Raphael Varane, who the Chelsea manager knows well from his time at the Bernabeu, where he brought in the French international from Lens.

The youngster is said to have a buyout clause worth £25m and that may be a price Mourinho is ready to fork out for a player of obvious potential.

Jose Mourinho is also keeping tabs on Mehdi Benatia, who has just completed a superb first season with AS Roma, and FC Porto defensive rock Eliaqium Mangala, the pair both said to have £35m release clauses.

Considering Chelsea finished last season as with the Premier League’s most solid defence there would appear to be no urgent need to spend big on another defender, especially as Mourinho opted to offer John Terry a well earned contract extension.
