The last week has been an excellent one for fans of Manchester United after the signings of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw were confirmed, and things may be about to get better with the news that key midfield target William Carvalho is open to leaving Sporting Lisbon, according to Sky Sports.

The 22 year-old Portuguese international was speaking ahead of returning home from his country’s disappointing 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign:

“Will I stay at Sporting? I don’t know. I’m going back to Portugal and then we’ll see.”

With box-to-box Spanish star Ander Herrera’s signing from Athletic Bilbao now having been completed, United are likely to be in the market for a more defensive minded midfielder to accompany him, and Carvalho may well fit the bill.

The Angolan-born player has become one of Sporting Lisbon’s most influential players, despite having played most of his football on loan at Fatima and Cercle Brugge, with just one full season of action with Sporting under his belt.

His displays were of a sufficient standard to make him one of the stand-out young central midfielders in Europe, however, with United quickly emerging as the main contenders for Carvalho’s signature.

His signing would represent a huge amount of change at Old Trafford, with none of the current crop of Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley and Darren Fletcher likely to be first choice ahead of Carvalho and Herrera.
