It sounds like one of the most unlikely transfer stories of the summer, but according to reports from the Daily Star, Real Madrid are interested in bringing Manchester United and England forward Danny Welbeck to the Bernabeu this summer.

Real are set to lose young Spaniard Alvaro Morata to Juventus as he seeks first team football and will be keen to replace him with another young forward who can be developed with demanding constant playing time, something that may apply to Welbeck.

The 23 year-old has made 90 Premier League appearances for Manchester United, scoring a respectable 20 goals, but has often been marginalised by his own versatility and workrate, pigeonholed as a hard-working wide forward rather than an out-and-out striker.

He has also made 26 appearances for England, once again scoring a respectable 8 goals but often being shifted into a deeper position to do a job for the manager.

Whether it is this role that Real envisage for Welbeck remains to be seen, but United are unlikely to demand an eye-watering fee if they are to let him go and he could represent a more sensible addition for the La Liga giants than immediately seems apparent.

With Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney standing in his way of regular first team football at Old Trafford, it may also be that Welbeck sees moving on as his best way of securing consistent action ahead of the arrival of new manager Louis van Gaal.
