Hummels enjoyed an excellent World Cup and may well feel the time is right for a fresh challenge having seen his Dortmund side fall way behind domestic rivals Bayer Munich.

Louis van Gaal will hope that Hummels helps to fill the void left by departing veterans Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, who have joined Inter Milan and QPR respectively, and the Dutch boss may well have his sights set on further defensive recruits before the summer is out.

Hummels won back to back domestic titles with Dortmund in 2010/11 and 2011/12 but having seen the likes of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski leave for the Allianz Arena the experienced defender may feel that his side lacks ambition and hence be open to a summer exit.

Man United have already completed the signings of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw from Athletic Bilbao and Southampton respectively.
