Liverpool have seemingly been dealt a transfer market blow today, with reported target Xherdan Shaqiri insisting that he will be staying at Bayern Munich this summer according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Swiss international, who impressed hugely for his country at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, had been suggested as a potential move for Brendan Rodgers as he looks to replace Luis Suarez.

With Lazar Markovic now having arrived from Benfica, however, the Reds’ need for a player such as Shaqiri has lessened and it now seems as thought the former FC Basel man will not be plying his trade at Anfield next season:

“It is the time of year when much is written, but as we all know, there is very little truth behind it.”

“As you all know I am currently on holiday so I am not in talks with other clubs nor have I spoken with any journalists.”

“I have a contract with FC Bayern until 2016.”

“My advisors are in regular contact with the responsible people at FC Bayern so there is no reason for speculation.”

Much of the speculation surrounding Shaqiri’s future emanated from the fact that he struggled to hold down a regular place in Pep Guardiola’s first team at the Allianz Arena last season, with Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery largely dominating game time in the wide positions.

With those two entering the twilight years of their career, however, Bayern are likely to be keen to keep a natural successor to their star men at the club and may have given him assurances over a growing role in the team.

One of the stars of football in Switzerland and the key man in what is a golden generation for them, Shaqiri burst onto the scene with some explosive displays for FC Basel both domestically and in Europe before securing his big move to the Bundesliga.
