Chelsea centre back Gary Cahill looks set to be rewarded for a fine couple of seasons in the club’s blue shirt, with the Mirror reporting that the England international is set to sign a bumper £120,000 a week new deal at Stamford Bridge.

The former Aston Villa trainee has become an integral part of the Chelsea defence since he was signed by Bolton Wanderers, combining steely defensive play with a knack for scoring crucial goals at the other game.

Cahill is also believed to be in the running for the England captaincy, with former skipper Steven Gerrard having retired from international football following the World Cup.

It is expected that Cahill’s impressive partnership with John Terry will once again form the bedrock of the Chelsea defence in the coming season, but with the club captain getting older it will be Cahill who is soon the senior figure in the heart of the club’s back four.

This new deal would be a show of faith from manager Jose Mourinho and the club’s hierarchy that Cahill is capable of taking on such increased responsibility as he enters into the prime years of his career.

With the 28 year-old having been signed from Bolton for just £7 million in 2012, he represents one of the more budget conscious deals that Chelsea have made in recent years.
