The Red Devils looking to sign Sporting’s Rojo.

Having handed in a transfer request at Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United are now closing in on a £16m deal to sign defender Marcos Rojo, according to the Daily Mail.

The Argentina international has been heavily linked with both Chelsea and Southampton in recent times, but it seems that it will be the Red Devils that complete the transfer.

United have been on the lookout for defensive recruitment all summer following the departure of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic on free transfers and then the £1.2m sale of Patrice Evra to Juventus.

Previous target Thomas Vermaelen completed his £15m switch to FC Barcelona on Saturday and since then new manager Louis van Gaal has instead turned his attention to Rojo.

The versatility of the 24-year-old makes him an attractive prospect to the Dutchman, with the South American having the ability to play as both a left-back and a central defender.

Rojo generally plays as a centre-back for Sporting, but at the 2014 World Cup the Argentine operated as a full-back for his country and showed great attacking nous on the left flank.

The 13-time Premier League champions are also thought to be interested in fellow Argentinian Angel di Maria and Ajax star Daley Blind.
