Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal could be set to trim has Old Trafford squad even further, with the Metro reporting that the Dutchman has told Napoli that he will respond to their approach for the Belgian midfielder within 48 hours.
Napoli have been reported to be interested in the former Everton man for much of the summer, with the report suggesting that journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has now reported that United have received an approach from the Serie A outfit for Fellaini.
Fellaini has struggled to settle at Old Trafford since making a big-money deadline day move from Goodison Park 12 months ago, having largely been criticised for his performances in central midfield as United floundered during the 2013/14 Premier League season.
With Louis van Gaal also having captured Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao, Fellaini faces increased competition for a regular place in the United midfield, meaning that he could be persuaded to allow him to move on.
It is not clear whether the approach made by Napoli was for a permanent or loan deal with Rafa Benitez’s side, although United may consider either option if it gets a significant chunk of Fellaini’s wages off the bill at Old Trafford.
