Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been pursuing the Greek international for 18 months and is looking to bring in the defender to replace Thomas Vermaelen, who has left for Barcelona.

Arsenal have held talks with Olympiakos over the weekend and were told Manolas would cost £8m but the north London side are confident they can get that fee down to £6m.

Juventus has briefly shown an interest.

Should Manolas secure a move to the Emirates Stadium then he will expect to receive a massive pay-rise from his current £7k a week deal.

Manolas will presumably act as a back-up to Arsenal’s first choice central defensive pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker with new signing Calum Chambers able to similarly fill the role as he did during Arsenal’s opening day win over Crystal Palace.
