Captain Mikel Arteta has suffered an ankle injury and this has led to Wenger’s push to bring in further options to help offer strength in depth in the centre of the park.

The north London side had scouts run the rule over the Kenyan international at Anfield last week and were impressed by the efforts of the former Celtic man.

Though Arteta’s injury isn’t thought to be serious, the Spaniard set for a two week lay-off, Wenger is still looking to bring in the 23 year old, perhaps with a view to the future.

St Mary’s boss Ronald Koeman will be looking to prevent any further Southampton exits having lost a number of top talents this summer but it’s likely that Wanyama would be interested in a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Southampton paid Celtic £12.5m to bring in Wanyama last July following the impressive displays put in by the defensive midfielder, especially in Champions League action, and would presumably demand a fee in excess of that outlay.

Wanyama could provide a very sturdy option to help provide protection for Arsenal’s back-line whilst also helping to offer more time on the ball for the north London side’s creative talents.
