Manchester United are ready to take their summer spending to almost £150m as negotiations begin for versatile Ajax star Daley Blind, according to the Daily Star.

Former Red Devils goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar – who now works for the Eredivisie champions – arrived at Carrington on Tuesday to thrash out a deal for the £18m defender.

With strong links with both clubs van der Sar has been tasked with negotiating the deal for Blind as new manager Louis van Gaal looks to complete an overhaul of his squad.

So far this summer Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo have all been acquired for a combined fee of £72m, whilst Angel di Maria completed his switch from Real Madrid on Tuesday for a British transfer record £59.7m.

Van Gaal is still keen to add one more defender to his ranks though having suffered the loss of Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic this summer.

The 63-year-old knows Blind well having worked with the player with the Netherlands national team for the past two years and the 24-year-old is also an attractive prospect due to his versatility.

The Dutch international can play as a left-back, central defender, or in defensive midfield and this would help plug a number of gaps that have already emerged in van Gaal’s team.

Things haven’t started that well for the new boss at Old Trafford, as following a home defeat and away draw to Swansea City and Sunderland in the Premier League, United lost 4-0 to League One outfit MK Dons in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.
