Manchester United are in last minute talks to try and rush through a move for goalkeeper Sergio Romero from Sampdoria, report Gazzetta Dello Sport, with manager Louis van Gaal keen to secure experienced cover for first choice stopper David de Gea.

Romero had been linked with a move to Liverpool recently to provide cover for Simon Mignolet, but it would appear that United are keen to win the race for Romero, who is free to leave Serie A side Sampdoria.

The Argentina World Cup goalkeeper spent last season on loan with AS Monaco in Ligue 1, but played just a handful of games as he covered for Danijel Subasic, with the French runners-up not exercising their option to make the move for Romero a permanent one.

The chance to sign experienced goalkeeping cover on the cheap has interested United, despite the fact that Anders Lindegaard looks set to stay at the club after hinting that he would be interested in leaving Old Trafford in search of increased first team opportunities.

Romero is likely to be a footnote on a busy transfer deadline day for United, who have already completed the signing of Daley Blind from Ajax and are currently in the process of putting striker Radamel Falcao through a medical ahead of a shock loan move from Monaco.
