Manchester United are expecting a busy transfer deadline day and the Red Devils could be kicking things off with a move for tough-tackling midfielder Nigel de Jong from AC Milan, report Goal.com.

The experienced former Manchester City midfielder was an important part of the Netherlands side that excelled under the management of Louis van Gaal at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and would add solidity and aggression to the United side, two components that have certainly appeared to be missing during the early stages of the 2014/15 season, including during the weekend’s 0-0 draw at Burnley.

De Jong played 90 minutes for AC Milan on Sunday evening, however, as they beat Lazio 3-1 in Pippo Inzaghi’s first Serie A match as manager, indicator that he is likely to be a key part of the Italian’s thinking for the coming season.

The report suggests that United are keen on doing an £8m deal with Milan for de Jong, however, a fee that could represent a bargain for a seasoned international and experienced Premier League performer.

Whether Milan would be willing to let him go without a replacement remains to be seen, however, although Marco van Ginkel is expected to sign on loan from Chelsea today, the Dutchman is more of an attacking, creative player than de Jong.
