Arsenal are reportedly keen on signing Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk after failing with a deadline day move for the Dutchman according to the Daily Mail.

The 23 year old centre-back has impressed since his £2.6m move to Parkhead last June and his good form has led to a call-up by national team boss Guus Hiddink this month.

Arsene Wenger was hoping to bring in defensive reinforcements at the close of the summer transfer window, targeting a number of talents including Premier League pair Matija Nastasic and Ron Vlaar from Man City and Aston Villa respectively, and may feel a move for van Dijk could become an option when the transfer window reopens.

Arsenal sold Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona and as such have only three out and out central defensive options with youngster Calum Chambers impressing a great deal as an alternative to Wenger’s first choice pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

One imagines Celtic would be loathed to lose their prized defensive asset and would probably demand a big fee for the former Groningen man.
