Welbeck had been criticised for a lack of goals during his time at Manchester United and his poor finishing has continued in an Arsenal shirt after he missed good chances in his first two appearances for the club, against Manchester City on Saturday and at Westfalenstadion on Tuesday evening.

Although he is frustrated that the England international can’t finish off the chances he’s getting, Wenger thinks the striker will be a good signing for the Gunners if he is given time.

“Danny [Welbeck] will improve,” he said. “I don’t think we have to make a problem of that.

“He had a very lively first-half. He had two or three good chances but couldn’t finish them. There was one obvious one. We have to be patient with him.”

Arsenal haven’t been at their best so far this season and currently sit in seventh position in the Premier League table with six points from their opening four games.

This indifferent form culminated in a poor performance against Dortmund in the first game of this year’s Champions League group stage.

The German side are expected to be the Gunners main rivals in Group D.
