The Italian striker has struggled during his short Liverpool career, only scoring one goal in eight appearances for the Reds and has come in for some harsh criticism from pundits over his general work-rate.

While his poor form is an issue, manager Brendan Rodgers also has to try and curb potential bad behaviour and it is for this reason that Wright wouldn’t have brought the 24-year-old to Anfield.

“When you look at the facts and the clubs he’s been at and manager he’s been under, I said it’s not a chance I’d have taken, simply because I can’t understand what is going to make him all of a sudden change the way he’s played,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I can see why Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers took a chance on him, because they did handle Suarez pretty well, but at some stage Mario has to say to himself, ‘I’ve got to let people know that I’m ready to get on with my career.’

“It’s only going to come down to him. It’s up to him to prove to people that his ability’s not just a myth.”

Balotelli was signed to replace Luis Suarez, who moved to Barcelona for £75 million during the summer however, the former Manchester City striker hasn’t shown the same energy and commitment that the Uruguayan did during his career with Liverpool.
