Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo are among the best players ever…

Luis Figo was recently asked whether Barcelona icon Lionel Messi or Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo was the best player in the world, but rather than be drawn on the question he came up with a third candidate.

The 41-year-old, who played for both teams during a glittering career that saw him win eight domestic league titles and the Champions League among a host of domestic and personal honours, recently joked that he was better than both of them.

As Goal.com explains, Ronaldo has been in scintillating form so far this season, scoring 19 times in 11 matches, while Barca star Messi has notched seven goals and seven assists for Luis Enrique’s side.

The source adds that the nominations for the 2014 Ballon d’Or are to be announced on 28th October, with current holder Ronaldo and four-time winner Messi both expected to be named as the debate over who is the world’s best player rages on.

“The best in the world is me. That way I don’t compromise,” Figo reasoned, despite having retired in 2009 after four years with Inter Milan.

“You cannot choose between the two best players in the world,” he continued. “It’s very difficult, because if you choose one over the other then it suggests the other is not good, which isn’t true. That’s why I prefer not to chose, because they’re both very good.”
