Talisca has scored six goals in his first seven league games for the Portuguese side, after joining from Bahia for just €4m earlier this year. Reports in the Daily Star believe both London clubs have been keeping tabs on him throughout his scoring streak.

Gunners scouts watched him in action for Brazil’s under-21 side against Bolivia on Friday. It was the third time Arsene Wenger has had the youngster watched, and contact has now been made with his agent.

Talisca was wanted by a host of Premier League teams, including Chelsea, during the summer, but work permit issues meant he ended up signing a five-year deal with Benfica instead.

Arsenal view the player as a long term replacement for Lukas Podolski, who the source believes could leave for Inter Milan in the January transfer window. Doubts remain about the German’s future despite Wenger recently insisting he is still part of his long-term plans.
