United spent in excess of £150m in the summer transfer window, but their new boss is still far from satisfied with his current playing squad, and is particularly keen on defensive reinforcements.

Reports in the Metro claim United see Coleman as crucial competition for Rafael at right-back while Barkley could replace Juan Mata; with Juventus set to swoop for the former Chelsea man.

Coleman, 26, joined Everton from Sligo Rovers in 2009, and is approaching his 150th appearance for the club in all competitions. The Republic of Ireland international was the club’s player of the year last season, and that has attracted the interest of a number of potential suitors.

Barkley, 20, made 34 Premier League appearances last season – scoring six goals – but has missed the entirety of the current campaign through injury. The form of the youth team graduate earned him a spot at last summer’s World Cup, and he has already made nine England appearances.
