Wenger led the club between 1987 and 1994, but has been with the Gunners since 1996, masterminding three Premier League title campaigns, as well as five FA Cup victories and five Community Shields.

Reports in the Daily Mail claim that officials from the Ligue 1 club met Wenger in August, and considered offering him a £10million-a-year deal to join, before he elected to sign a new three-year contract with Arsenal instead.

The Frenchman has a ‘strong affection’ for the club according to vice president Vadim Vasilyev, who said: “For Monaco he is part of our history, part of our heritage. He is doing an amazing job.

“I don’t know if one day he will want to come back, but we keep a very good relationship. Last time we exchanged was during the Emirates Cup. He keeps a strong affection for Monaco. Our ambition is to be one of the clubs that plays regularly in the Champions League.”
