The opening goal of the night was greeted by silence at Anfield. At least, apart from a pocket of away fans who were going wild. Marvin Emnes brilliantly hooked a volley into the far corner to put Swansea ahead, with goalkeeper Brad Jones left with no chance.

But on from the bench, Balotelli scored just his second Liverpool goal, with his strike coming four minutes from time. The Italian showed great movement to get a yard on the Swansea defence and guide past Gerhard Tremmel. Extra-time awaited…

That was until a controversial red card. Swansea’s Federico Fernandez was shown it for a late challenge on Philippe Coutinho. A debatable decision to say the least.

But it was a defensive disaster that allowed Liverpool to claim their winner. The goal came in the fourth minute of injury time when Coutinho floated a free-kick to the back stick where Dejan Lovren leapt to head home.
