Arsenal Boss Worries About Lionel Messi’s Future And Thinks Cristiano Ronaldo Could Leave Him Trailing

The French manager discussed the world’s two best players on television.

Arsene Wenger has discussed Lionel Messi’s posiition in Luis Enrique’s new Barcelona system, and the Frenchman is not a fan.

The Arsenal manager discussed the way that Enrique has shifted Messi into a wider position.

“Playing on the wing is physically very demanding… When he sees Cristiano scoring plenty more goals than he is, his morale will dip. He won’t be able to maintain his goalscoring stats playing on the wing,” Wenger was quoted in Marca.

So far, any positional changes that Messi’s new boss has made doesn’t seem to have affected him too badly.

The Argentine has 15 goals in 22 starts, a record that would be quite incredible, if his nemesis Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t already accelerating into the distance.

The Real Madrid star, who it could be argued is played out wide more often than Messi, has an astonishing 23 goals in 20 starts.

Both players insist they are motivated by factors other than their rivalry, but it is hard to image them not comparing statistics at some level.

Messi recently beat Ronaldo to Raul’s Champions League goalscoring record, and there’s no doubt that the two players will both leave almost unmatchable statistics in that tournament.
