The Saints midfielder claims that he could have made the switch to Tottenham if Arsenal hadn’t have signed Calum Chambers.

Southampton had already lost Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, and Dejan Lovren to Liverpool, and after losing Chambers to Arsenal they were not prepared to allow Schneiderlin to leave as well.

“Lots of people told me that if I left, it would be the straw that broke the camel’s back, especially as Calum Chambers’ transfer had gone down very badly indeed,” he said.

“That was when the club realised that it had to stop, because the fans were already quite angry.

“One player doesn’t make a team, but by not letting me leave, the club was sending out a strong signal that it was still in control”

The Frenchman is still highly coveted, with Arsenal in particular crying out for a defensive midfielder of his calibre.

With Southampton flying high in second place at the moment he is unlikely to be too upset at being forced to stay, with Arsenal and Tottenham both struggling so far in mid table.

His main gripe was a lack of Champions League football, so if Southampton can produce that this season then he may be happy to stay for Ronald Koeman’s revolution.
