Arsene Wenger is keen to land Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels but should he fail to do so then this source claims he will turn his attentions to the highly-rated Championship starlet, though it’s hard to see Mings as a worthy alternative to the World Cup winner.

The 21 year old has impressed over the past 18 months and may well be ready for a ‘step-up’ to the Premier League and the former Southampton man’s versatility has clearly alerted Wenger.

Wenger has struggled with injuries at the back this season with the likes of Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny both suffering lengthy lay-offs and the north London club’s failure to replace Thomas Vermaelen following his move to Barcelona has put further strain on the club’s defence.
