The tricky winger had an excellent World Cup, helping his side to finish third in Brazil. He attracted the attention of a number of top European clubs, but turned down the chance to work with his compatriot Ronald Koeman at Southampton.

Currently playing in the Eredivisie with PSV Eindhoven, he was convinced to stay in the Netherlands for the time being after he was offered a massive new deal by the Dutch side.

Koeman made it clear that his side were interested in the youngster, but after being unable to convince him to make the switch to St Mary’s stadium he believes it was too bad for both parties.

“We made enquiries with his agent”, Koeman said.

“With his style of play he would fit into England well. Memphis is fast, focused and physically strong.

“Southampton would have been an excellent springboard for him to get to the very top of the Premier League, but he did not did not want to sit down and he chose to stay at PSV.

“Too bad for us, but also for him.”

Southampton are flying high in the Premier League even without Depay, and are currently in the top four despite being tipped to struggle this season.
