The Man United boss will hope that his side’s opening offer of €40m (£31m) will test AS Roma’s resolve with their Dutch midfield maestro having successfully recovered to full fitness following a lengthy spell out on the sidelines.

Despite having signed Ander Herrera and Daley Blind, as well as seeing a resurgence in form from Belgian Marouane Fellaini, van Gaal still has his sights set on Strootman and will hope to lure his former national team charge to Old Trafford in January.

The offer from Man United would represent a doubling of the sum the Stadio Olimpico side forked out for Strootman in July 2013 and the fact that Rudi Garcia’s side have battled manfully in both domestic and continental action during his injury lay-off may act as further motivation to accept the bid.

Strootman was a regular in the Netherlands national team set-up under van Gaal and would no doubt have been a key member of his 2014 World Cup finals squad but for his cruciate ligament injury.
