The Red Devils are apparently in the market for a forward after having made a bid for Palermo youngster Paulo Dybala earlier in the week. That offer has already been turned down, and this one may have also been so as well.

The 25-year-old played under United boss Louis van Gaal while the Dutchman was manager of the Bundesliga giants, and the 63-year-old might be keen for a reunion at Old Trafford.

However, Bayern do not want to sell the 2014 World Cup winner, with him being a key part of an awe inspiring team.

Despite this the Mancunian club look set to try anyway, with this £45 million bid seemingly the first foray in to negotiations with the Allianz Arena-based side.

The North West team may have to look elsewhere if they want to bear fruit in their search for a striker.
