Arsenal are in talks to sign Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista, but work permit issues could halt the uncapped Brazilian’s move to the Premier League, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 24-year-old has impressed Arsene Wenger with his fine performances in La Liga, and it is claimed that a deal could happen this month, with Villarreal open to a swap deal involving out-of-favour Gunners forward Joel Campbell.

The Spanish side are one of a number of clubs interested in the Costa Rican, who has been unable to break into the team this season and could make way as Wenger makes a signing in defence his priority.

Despite a solid display and clean sheet in their shock 2-0 win over Manchester City this weekend, Arsenal have been short of options at the back this term since Thomas Vermaelen’s departure and a number of injury problems throughout the campaign.

Paulista is now believed to be the club’s main target in that position, and the player himself has been quoted as saying it would be a dream move – as reported by the Metro.
