QPR nearly pulled the plug on a deal to sign West Ham United striker Mauro Zarate on loan this January due to major concerns over his fitness, according to the Daily Mail.

The 27-year-old did not manage to impress in his short time at Upton Park, and has also seen playing time limited at Loftus Road as manager Harry Redknapp has him on a special training regime to get him back to peak fitness.

Zarate has long been regarded as a talented player not fulfilling his potential, having first caught the eye as a youngster in Argentina, whilst also enjoying a fairly successful stint with Birmingham City earlier in his career.

Still, the player now looks out of shape and not ready to play regularly for the Rs in an attempt to help save the West Londoners from relegation this season.

Redknapp decided to go ahead with the deal this month anyway, but it remains to be seen if Zarate will manage to earn a place in the team after this difficult start.
